Delta Sigma Pi at Penn State is involved in the largest student-run philanthropy in the world–THON.
THON, short for the Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance MaraTHON, is a year-long fundraising effort created to spread awareness about pediatric cancer and raise money for Four Diamonds at the Penn State Hershey Children's Hospital. Supporting over 4,800 families, Four Diamonds pioneers life-saving cancer research, provides world-renowned care, and ensures that none of these families see a medical bill during their child’s treatment.
The Four Diamonds fund was launched by Charles and Irma Millard in honor of their son Christopher, who passed away from pediatric cancer. Shortly before Chris lost his fight to cancer, he wrote a story about a knight who had to collect Four Diamonds-courage, honesty, wisdom, and strength-to defeat an evil sorceress. These diamonds guide the THON mission, honoring Chris’s legacy and reminding us all of the attributes that will help us defeat pediatric cancer.
THON culminates in a no-sitting, no-sleeping 46 hour dance marathon in late February each year! As an organization, we raised a total of $84,339.19 in 2024, remaining among the top 10 fundraisers for Special Interest Organizations. We have three amazing THON families: The Bushes, The Wrights, and The Schneiders, whom we love and support more than anything! The concept of THON and the Four Diamonds is forever embedded in our fraternity and we will continue to support all families battling pediatric cancer. We stand against cancer For The Kids every day so that one day we can dance in celebration For The Cure!
